Treasure Island (1883) was Robert Louis Stevenson’s first book-length work of fiction. It brought him widespread popularity and was one of the era’s most widely read books. With the publication of Kidnapped Stevenson came to be thought of as a children’s writer, which made the appearance of Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde all the more startling.
An immediate success, the work was most definitely not intended for children. A jarring examination of conflicting personality traits and moral standards lurking within a single individual, Stevenson’s wife would later recount awakening him from a nightmare which became the basis of Jekyll & Hyde. His stepson, Lloyd Osbourne, would recall Stevenson reading the first half of the story aloud, and then dashing upstairs to continue writing while his family sat horrified in the parlor.
The tale became an international sensation and an enduring classic, spawning hundreds of stage and screen adaptations and introducing characters that have become cultural icons.
