The Invisible Man [Large Print]

The Invisible Man
The Complete & Unabridged Original Classic
by H. G. Wells

The Invisible Man originally appeared in serialized form in Pearson’s Weekly in 1897 and was published as a novel the same year telling the story of “Griffin,” a former medical student and scientist who has, through research into the science of optics, invented a process to make a human body invisible. He has successfully applied the procedure to himself but finds that he is unable to reverse the effects, leading to a series of events that spiral out of control. The extent to which “runaway science,” Griffin’s personal psychological makeup, or human nature in general drive the events echoes a theme that recurs throughout Wells’ works. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man [Large Print]

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
Unabridged Large Print Edition
by James Joyce

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) is the first novel by Irish writer James Joyce. Written in a modernist style, making extensive use of unconventional punctuation and a stream-of-consciousness narrative style on, it follows the religious, social and intellectual awakening of young Stephen Dedalus, Joyce’s fictional alter ego. Stephen questions and rebels against the Catholic and Irish conventions under which he has grown up, culminating in his self-exile from Ireland to Europe. The work employed literary techniques that Joyce developed more fully in Ulysses (1922) and Finnegans Wake (1939). Continue reading “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man [Large Print]”

The Man in Lower Ten [Large Print]

The Man in Lower Ten
Unabridged Large Print Edition
by Mary Roberts Rinehart

The Man in Lower Ten…

“McKnight is gradually taking over the criminal end of the business. I never liked it, and since the strange case of the man in lower ten, I have been a bit squeamish. Given a case like that, where you can build up a network of clues that absolutely incriminate three entirely different people, only one of whom can be guilty, and your faith in circumstantial evidence dies of overcrowding. I never see a shivering, white-faced wretch in the prisoners’ dock that I do not hark back with shuddering horror to the strange events on the Pullman car Ontario, between Washington and Pittsburg, on the night of September ninth, last…” Continue reading “The Man in Lower Ten [Large Print]”

Father Brown Mysteries
The Innocence of Father Brown [Large Print Edition]: The Complete & Unabridged Original Classic
by G. K. Chesterton

Mystery fans unfamiliar with Father Brown may find Chesterton’s stories a bit different. Many of the stories don’t quite fit either the standard (“Whodunit?”) or inverted (“Howcatchem?”) styles common to the mystery genre, and Father Brown is frequently less concerned with the apprehension of the wrongdoer than with getting him to understand, and admit, the error of his ways.
